1. Headstock

The headstock is clamped on left-hand end of bed. It houses the
  1. spindle
  2. speed change mechanism, and
  3. change gears.

Headstock spindle

The headstock must be strong. Otherwise the cutting forces involved may distort it, which in turn induces harmonic vibrations. These vibrations will be transferred to the workpiece and the quality of the finished workpiece will be reduced. Hollow cylindrical shaft

The main axis is hollow for long bars to extend through the work area. It is supported by precision bearings and fitted with a chuck or faceplate to hold the workpiece. A taper is often included at the end of the spindle. This allows hollow tubular (Morse standard) tapers to be inserted, reducing the size of the taped holes and allowing the use of centers. 

Driving work-holding devices

On machines manufactured during the 1950s, the spindle was driven directly by a flat belt pulley. Bull gears are used to reduce spindle speed. Modern lathes use gear boxes. The appropriate speed is selected through the gearbox.

Special centers, which rotate with the work, can be used in the tailstock; These are known as "rotating centers" and should not be referred to as "live centers" - the term is reserved for a center carried in a headstock spindle.
Long ago the centers were referred to by Turner as "poppets" - presumably from "pop it in" - and they did themselves with them, securing them in cotton waste and jealously clad in the top pockets of their overalls .

  Lathe Machine Bed 

The lathe bed provides the foundation for the entire machine and keeps the headstock, tailstock and carriage in alignment. The bed surfaces are finely molded - and on which the carriage and the tailstock slide - are known as "ways".
Some beds have a gap near the headstock from which extra-large diameters can be turned. Sometimes the gap is made by mechanistic methods preventing headstock depletion, sometimes by a piece of bed, which can be removed, removed - and lost.
Some very large sticks have a "sliding bed", where the upper part, on which the carriage and the tailstock sit, can be slide along a separate lower part - and therefore make the gap equally large or small.

This is usually the first step of operating any lathe on a lathe machine. The metal is cut from the end so that it can fit at right angles to the axis and remove the mark.

2. Turning

This operation is adopted in order to cut the metal parallel to the axis. Parallel turning is done to decrease the diameter of the metal.

3. Threading

Thread Cutting on a lathe is a process that creates a helical ridge of a similar section on the workpiece. This is performed by making gradual cuts with the threading toolbit the same size as the thread form required.

4. Drilling 
Drilling

The tailstock of a lathe can be used for drilling with the help of drill chuck attachment. The drill chuck has a Morse taper shaft that can be pushed into the shaft of the tailstock, locking it in position. The common starting point for drilling with a center lathe is to use a countersink bit.

5. Boring 
Boring

Lathe boring is a cutting operation that uses a single-point cutting tool or boring head to create conical or cylindrical surfaces by extending the existing opening in a workpiece. For nontapered holes, the cutting tool moves parallel to the axis of rotation. 

6. Knurling 

Knurling is a process of influencing the shape or straight line pattern of diamonds in the surface of a workpiece using specially shaped rigid metal wheels to improve its appearance and provide a better gripping surface.

7. Grooving

Groove cutting on CNC latches is a multi step machining operation. The term grooving is usually applied to the process of forming a narrow cavity of a certain depth on the face of a cylinder, cone or part. The size of the groove, or at least a significant portion of it, will be the size of the cutting tool.
